Materials

The traditional material used for tatami surfaces is Igusa (rush grass), and we proudly continue to use this authentic natural material in our tatami mats.

Our Igusa tatami surfaces are made from natural woven rush grass without the use of glue or synthetic adhesives. As a renewable plant material, Igusa is breathable, moisture-resistant, and naturally helps regulate humidity and temperature, contributing to a comfortable indoor environment throughout the year.

The fresh, natural fragrance and unique texture of Igusa create a sense of calm and bring an authentic Japanese atmosphere to any space.

Natural Igusa will gradually change color over time. Depending on usage and exposure to sunlight, the surface will naturally develop from fresh green tones to warm golden hues, giving each tatami a unique and authentic character.

In addition to traditional Igusa tatami, modern tatami surfaces are also available in innovative materials designed for contemporary lifestyles.

One popular option is Washi Tatami, made from wood pulp that is processed into durable paper fibers and finished with a protective resin coating. This advanced manufacturing process creates a surface that is highly resistant to water, stains, fading, and daily wear.

Thanks to its resin-coated surface, liquids and stains do not easily penetrate the material. Most spills can be removed simply by wiping with a damp cloth, making everyday maintenance quick and effortless.

Washi tatami is also more resistant to abrasion, scratches, and wear than traditional tatami surfaces, making it an excellent choice for busy households, families with children, and homes with pets.

Combining Japanese craftsmanship with modern technology, Washi tatami offers the elegant appearance of traditional tatami with enhanced durability, practicality, and ease of care for modern living.
